Hemangioma Treatment for Children
Hemangiomas are the most common type of birthmark or benign tumor of the skin. They are generally present at birth or appear shortly after birth. Most develop on the skin in the head or neck area and grow rapidly, but they can also be found in other areas. Three major types of hemangiomas are routinely treated by facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons. Dr. Eric Cerrati can diagnose and perform hemangioma treatment for children at his office in Park City.
- Infantile Hemangiomas
Infantile hemangiomas are groups of blood vessels that can be present at birth or develop during the first three months. They are common on the head or neck but can appear anywhere. Infantile hemangiomas are more common in females than in males. Commonly known as “strawberries” from their bright red appearance, they gradually grow in size over the first year of life. Surgical treatments are usually only necessary if the hemangioma causes complications like bleeding or other vital functions.
- Non-Involuting Congenital Hemangiomas
Non-involuting congenital hemangiomas (NICH) are growths of blood vessels that appear at birth fully formed. They are mostly seen on the head, neck, lower jaw and joints and occur equally in males and females. This type of hemangioma is benign and only addressed if medically necessary.
- Rapidly Involuting Congenital Hemangiomas
Rapidly involuting congenital hemangiomas (RICH) are benign growths of blood vessels that are present at birth. They shrink and lighten in color during the first two years after birth. Treatment is typically not required unless the hemangioma causes complications that necessitate surgical removal.
