That signal changes with age. As you come into middle age, your lips begin to shrink and droop at the corners. Collagen, which provides natural volume and firmness, begins to slow production, and your lips begin to thin out and lose that youthful plumpness.

Reversing the Process

While you cannot actually reverse the aging process, with various treatments, you can change the appearance of your lips. Volume can be added to make them fuller and more defined once again. This can be done with dermal filler injections or surgically with lip dermal fat grafting.

Temporary measures can be taken to add balance and symmetry to lips. Juvéderm® or Restylane® are often used to achieve these goals. Some individuals choose to use dermal lip fillers such as these to help them decide if they would rather go a more permanent route.

Maintaining Healthy Lips

Whether you decide to make a temporary or permanent change in the appearance of your lips, you want to keep them looking healthy and appealing. You can do this by keeping them moisturized and hydrated. Drinking enough water is important for all your bodily functions as well as maintaining healthy skin. Additionally, using sunscreen will protect the delicate skin on your lips. Before applying lip color, apply basic moisturizer. Simple products such as cocoa butter, aloe vera, coconut oil or vitamin E work well as a moisturizing primer for lip color.
