As we grow older, the muscles and skin in our faces lose elasticity. This results in the common signs of aging, such as heavy eyebrows, loose skin around the jawline, folds around the mouth and nose and lowering of the cheeks. Depending on your age, lifestyle and genetics, you may not experience all of these problems at once. If the issues you want to correct are primarily in the top third of your face, you may be a candidate for a midface lift.
Facelifts, Midface Lifts and Cheek Lifts
The terminology of the various ‘lifts’ can be confusing. It’s important to know which part of the face each type of lift targets, so you understand which procedure is best suited to your needs.
Traditional facelifts use incisions around your ears and hairline to pull your skin up and back. This surgery primarily changes the lower face and jaw, but not the center of the face.
Midface lifts target the cheek and lower eye area, where the first signs of aging often appear. Using smaller incisions than a traditional facelift, the tissues in the middle of the face are raised both vertically and back. When the cheeks are lifted, the underlying fat also moves, correcting issues like hollows under eyes and folds around the mouth. This results in a more youthful appearance.
Cheek lifts create changes to the bottom third of your face, typically adding volume to fill out the cheek area and address some issues with folds around the mouth.
Which Procedure Is Best for You?
It is not uncommon to have multiple areas of concern to discuss with your surgeon. For example, if you wish to enhance both your mid-face and forehead, a midface lift can be performed with a brow lift. If you want to rejuvenate your jawline, cheeks and under eyes, you can combine a traditional facelift and midface lift.
