Dermatochalasis, or excessive eyelid skin, is a common condition that affects the eyelids. While more common on the upper eyelids, dermatochalasis can appear on both the lower and upper eyelids, impacting both form and function of the eyes. This skin condition can make the eyes look droopy and tired, as well as interfere with vision. The best solution for dermatochalasis is blepharoplasty to remove excess skin and reshape the eyelids.
What Causes Dermatochalasis?
The most common cause of dermatochalasis is aging. The majority of people with sagging, excess eyelid skin on the upper or lower eyelids are older, usually in their 60s, 70s or beyond. However, people experience this condition at younger ages, too, due to genetics. In severe cases of upper eyelid dermatochalasis, the skin hangs over the eyelashes and into the line of vision. Eyelid lift surgery can remove sagging eyelid skin and create a more youthful and functional eyelid.
Blepharoplasty for Excess Upper Eyelid Skin
Dermatochalasis is a noticeable condition that makes the eyes look sad, tired and older. There are many cosmetic treatments that can help improve the skin around the eyes but the only effective treatment for severe dermatochalasis is plastic surgery. Upper blepharoplasty is performed through a small incision that is usually placed along the crease in the upper eyelid. Excess fat and skin are removed, then the eyelid skin is tightened and sutured in place. The incision is well hidden once it heals and the eyes look larger, youthful and more alert.
Lower Eyelid Lift Surgery
Dermatochalasis of the lower eyelid usually presents as bags and hanging skin under the eyes. While this does not impact vision or eye function, it can add years to the face and portray an exhausted or sickly appearance. Lower eyelid lift surgery can remove the sagging skin and undereye bags through a small incision inside the lower eyelid, refreshing the appearance of the eyes and face.
